Chennai, May 6: In a seismic shift in Tamil Nadu politics, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by former actor Vijay, has emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 state assembly elections — winning 108 out of 234 seats on its very first electoral outing.

Vijay on Tuesday formally wrote to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar staking his claim to form the government, ending a 59-year duopoly shared between the DMK and AIADMK. The DMK secured 59 seats while the AIADMK managed 47, both humbled by the political newcomer.

Despite being 10 seats short of the 118-seat majority mark, TVK is expected to stitch together a coalition with the help of smaller parties. An AIADMK MLA-elect has claimed that party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami is in talks to provide outside support to TVK. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Congress unit is holding a key legislature party meeting to decide its stand.

Vijay, who is taking a "measured approach," chaired a crucial meeting with newly elected MLAs at TVK headquarters in Panayur, congratulating them and laying out the roadmap for government formation
