The dust has barely settled on Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s decisive floor test victory today, but his government is already facing its first major national policy clash. Hours after the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured 144 votes in the Assembly, the National Testing Agency (NTA) dropped a bombshell: the cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 exam due to widespread paper leak allegations.
For the newly minted Chief Minister, this isn't just an administrative failure by the Union Government; it's a validation of Tamil Nadu's long-standing fight against the centralized medical entrance test.
A Swift Response from Fort St. George
While celebrating their trust vote victory, the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) was quick to pivot to the NEET crisis. Sources close to the administration indicate that CM Vijay is preparing an aggressive legal strategy to bypass the exam entirely for state board students.
Reiterating a stance he held long before taking office, Vijay is expected to push for a constitutional amendment. His core argument? Education must be moved out of the Concurrent List and placed back under the State List.
The "Special Concurrent List" Proposal
Rather than simply opposing the current system, the TVK government is reviving a pragmatic, yet bold, solution first proposed by Vijay during his earlier campaigns: the creation of a Special Concurrent List.
This framework would:
- Grant State governments full autonomy in managing educational and health departments.
- Allow the Union government to retain control over national institutions (like AIIMS or JIPMER) without forcing standardized testing on state-run medical colleges.
- Abolish the "One Nation, One Examination" policy, which the TVK argues puts rural students at a severe disadvantage.
Pressure from the Opposition
The cancellation has also provided ammunition for the opposition. DMK President M.K. Stalin has publicly urged the new TVK government to take a firm, uncompromising stand, warning that mere "condemnations" will not suffice. With the ball now in his court, CM Vijay must navigate the complex legal labyrinth of securing a permanent NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu—a promise that propelled his party's massive youth mandate.
